Uninstalling and securing my Soilcrop soil probe

Updated over 2 months ago

Prerequisites

Required materials:

  • A water container (10 liters per probe to uninstall)

  • Pliers or a knife to cut the zip ties

  • A shovel or a small spade to clear the top of the probe

  • A box to safely store the probe and the casing

Process

🚨 It is important to secure the box and the area around the probe cap to prevent soil from entering the connectors.

Do not pull on the cap.

  1. Turn off the box of your Soilcrop station.

  2. Disconnect the probe from its box by unscrewing the connector and cutting the zip ties.

  3. Clear the soil around the top of the probe for about 10 cm. You should be able to grab the probe by hand below the cap.

  4. Pour plenty of water (10 liters) along the probe in several stages to soften the soil around the tube, and wait 5 minutes for the water to fully penetrate the soil.
💡 To speed up the process, you can gently rock the tube from side to side.

  5. Grab the tube under the cap and rotate it a quarter turn.
🚨 Only pull vertically once you have successfully made the quarter turn. If the probe does not come free immediately, add more water and wait another 5 minutes before trying again.

  6. Pull the probe vertically, making sure not to bend or damage the tube.
💡 If you feel any resistance, add more water.

  7. Check the overall condition of the probe.

⚠️ Check:

  1. That the probe is not damaged and that the cable is not cut or exposed.

  2. That the box has not been damaged and all screws are present.

8. Rinse the Soilcrop probe thoroughly with clean water.

9. Store your probe in a box (preferably the original one) away from direct light.

🚨 Exposure to sunlight poses significant risks to your station and may lead to warranty exclusion.
